God is in charge

28. september 2017

I will put my trust in my heavenly Father and pray that His will be done. Only the Lord can make America great again. Lets pray that he does.

President Trump, as much as it pains me to write that name after the word President, has me thinking. Let me be clear and upfront about this, I do not like this man. I do not like the way he treats people. I do not like the way he speaks about immigrants, or doesn't speak about racism. I do not like the way he has spoken about treating women. I am an American and no matter how long I live in Denmark part of me still cries out when I hear him speak on tv and tear down another nationality or attempt to use fear as a weapon or not talk about the evil of White Supremacy or so many other things.

So why am I talking about him here? Well he has me thinking, because as his war of words with North Korea gets hotter and the threats begin to fly I am challenged to remember something. God is in charge. This sounds both simple and trite yet it racks my brain. God is in charge, so if the world is going to end He is going to end it. Not Trump, not Kim Jong Un or Putin or Merkel or anyone else. This gives me a sense of peace but also makes me wonder, "Where is God in all this?".

Nothing has changed

This makes me flash back to Israel in the time of the Judges, or further back to the time of Moses and Pharaoh, or forward to the terrible times under King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, or forward still to the time of Jesus and Pilot, or Paul and Nero. All of a sudden it hit me. This is not special. Living in a world where the leaders seem like terrible choices that you didn't choose is not some crazy thing only happening to people today. This has happened to Gods people constantly, and in far worse circumstances, for the last 3000 years or so.

Paul didn't vote for Nero (no one voted for Nero), Jesus wasn't fighting with Pilot about his politics. Terrible leaders come and go, God stays the same. He is with us in our trials and he will help us respond to them. We are called to respond when the world goes crazy, Jesus makes this clear. We are called to love our enemies. We are called to pray for them. We are called to trust God and lastly if things are dire we are called to stand. Stand firm in faith, firm in trust and firm in love come what may.

So President Trump is teaching me about how to follow my Lord and saviour. I am trying to love him by praying for him and that God will help him lead and that he will let God do so. I am not good at this. It is difficult and I don't really like it, but I will put my trust in my heavenly Father and pray that His will be done in the life of The Donald. Only the Lord can make America great again. Lets pray that he does.
